Pear Tree to get new relief road

A new relief road at Pear Tree looks set to be included in an £88m package of transport improvements to ease congestion on Oxford's clogged roads.

The link road would connect the A40 and A44 to take traffic away from the Wolvercote roundabout and roads north of the city.

It is just one of the options now being looked at by county highways planners, who are investigating a multi-million-pound raft of measures to improve main routes into Oxford.

With the idea of turning the A34 into a three lane motorway ruled out, it has emerged County Hall is focusing on major ring road junctions, north and south of the city.

The idea of a new link road near Pear Tree has been raised before.

But County Hall says the scheme could now be achieved thanks to a £62m allocation from the Regional Transport Board towards the Access to Oxford scheme.

Daniel Round, principal transport planner for Access to Oxford, said: "The difference is there is now a great deal of funding available.

"We are wiping the slate clean and going back to the drawing board.

"There is potential at Pear Tree to put a link road in, to create a large one-way gyratory system."

The Oxford Mail understands the link road would be built across a field behind the BMW garage near Wolvercote Roundabout to create a new route between the A40 and A44.

Transport chiefs are also looking to see how access to Oxford could be improved at all three junctions north of the city at Pear Tree, Wolvercote and Banbury Road.

It is also investigating improvements to the south of the city at Heyford Hill, Kennington and Hinksey Interchange.

County councillor Ian Hudspeth, cabinet member for transport, said: "Traffic crawls up from Pear Tree to Wolvercote - it is a particularly bad bottleneck.

"The link road would be quite short, but it could greatly relieve pressure on the Wolvercote roundabout with a beneficial knock-on effect for A40 users.

"I'm sure some people would have wanted to see a bigger scheme with a road linking the A40 to the A34.

"But we couldn't do that without the co-operation of the Highways Authority."

Meanwhile, plans for electronic road signs - offering motorists live information - are set to be approved on May 20.

When the signs are installed, they will give motorists advanced warning of roadworks, congestion accidents and tell drivers when the city's park-and-rides or car parks are full.

The variable message signs on the key approaches to Oxford will cost £500,000 and will be sited at Yarnton, Eynsham, Wolvercote, Sandford, Cumnor and the A40 next year

About time something was done including the daily queue into the banbury road roundabout. It needs joined up thinking. Get the Highways agency to postpone the repairs to A34 wolvercote flyover. Plan the relief and other roads then do all the building work, as the flyover design may need changing

Oxford has a transport policy???? Really...now that does surprise me!
Oxford traffic is utter chaos. Whoever is responsible for the traffic management in and around Oxford should be sacked and a new competant team put in place.
Traffic management is all about flow, pointless sets of useless traffic lights are not a solution!
How much time is wasted travelling in and around Oxford and at what cost?
Time for a change! get rid of the incompetant idiots who are currently in charge and replace them with forward thinking professionals who know and understand traffic management.

Oh dear- the sanctimonious cyclist strikes again!

Perhaps if he were longer SIGHTED, he'd see disabled people; people with young children; people who live outside the ring road; people who need to take tools or other large items in and out of work- in fact- normal, working people who HAVE to drive.

Frankly, I'm bored of the holier- than- thou cyclists who think that they have solved the World's problems by simply ignoring all social and transport developments that have taken place in the past two centuries.

I have elderly relatives who live in city centre. When i visit I travel comfortably from South Wales until we reach the ring road. From thereon it is constant delays.Last time there was a family wedding we missed the ceremony as we were stuck in traffic and then queued to park. By the time we finally arrive we were well stressed. It's the worst city I ever drive in and I have driven in a lot of places. Not visitor friendly and I am an Oxford native originally.

The problem with the A420 (apart from Swindon being at the other end (OUFC Rules <bg>) is that it crosses county borders so would be a national improvement. This has been talked about on numerous occasions but apart from the short stretch at Kingston Bagpuise they have never done anything about it.

I travel to work at Bullingdon each day so go against the traffic likewise coming home at night. Its not just the road from Peartree to Wolvercote its the whole length of the A34 and A44 that needs looking at, still any improvements would be welcome.

Absolutely right.

Make the pavements wider then the pedestrians will have a chance of avoiding the cyclists who continually flout the law by riding on the pavements and not the road. I know the old arguement, "its not safe to ride on the road" well give yourselves a chance, obey road signs, do not wear headphones when cycling, be aware of your surroundings and look before you pull out of junctions or change lanes on the road. Lights at night are also preferable.

You know it makes sense.......

and one of them is a 4.2 ltr 4wd, but with petrol at £1.20 a litre, we all, out of forced necessity, need to think of alternate transport. i am not a sanctimonious cyclist, but when on my bike, or as a pedestrian, or as a human being, i have as many rights as when i am in my 4wd.....you tosser
